A MOTHERS VIEW
You will be amazed how many people have a strong view on this subject, many of whom haven’t got twins themselves! You are bound to have thought about whether your children will be dressed alike or completely differently, or sometimes alike and sometimes differently; and after they are born you will think about it some more!
Few can deny that twin or triplet babies dressed alike look gorgeous but if yours are different sex this is not always ideal. Sometimes people will buy you baby clothes as presents, and this will dictate how you dress your children; at other times the twins themselves will have more to do with your decision. For example, they can start the day dressed alike but no two children will dribble, vomit or leak at the same pace and whilst one baby might go through two or three outfits in a day, it will seem an unnecessary waste of time and effort to change the other baby just so that they look the same.
Some people dress their children alike because it is simpler to buy two of everything, some people don’t because what suits one doesn’t suit the other. If you want to dress your children alike but are worried about identity issues, it is worth remembering that many siblings of different ages are dressed alike by their parents, without suffering a loss of personality. On the other hand, of course, children of different ages do not have the same problem of being mistaken for one another. Sometimes dressing identical twins differently is a useful way of helping others to differentiate between them.
As with all aspects of parenthood, each of us is free to indulge our own preferences and tastes and that is exactly what you must do, regardless of anybody else’s opinion. Just so long as we remember to listen to our children’s views on the subject when they start to take an interest in their own appearance.
